lily cuttings & whats nibbling them?

| Can anyone share the best way to take cuttings off water lilies. Mine are now emerging with small leaves and many seem nibbled...any idea...I have no fish and not many snails can be seen..but have seen 2 newts!! |

My guess snails.
Newts are carnivorous, so not them unless they have damaged them trying to lay eggs in the tiny new leaves. |
