Moorhens are all black, coots have a white patch on their head.....hence bald as a coot. I'm sure someone told me one of these species is declining, but if you don't want them, best to discourage them before they nest rather than after. Probably illegal after. Water pistol? Creating a racket? |

| I have always wanted a way of rememberig which one is a coot and which was a moorhen--it is so simple when you know. Do you have a lake nearby? I imagine you have created a nice quiet nursery without much competition from ducks etc. for space and food. How good are you with a water pistol? We have a problem with wood pigeons taking baths, and relieving themselves in the pond--leave quite a lot of scum behind. |

| We had a coot suddenly appear in our pond last summer. It made one hell of a mess as pond is only small. We caught it and took it in the car to the nearest village pond!!! |
