uv filter cleaning

| Hi, cleaned out my sponge filter today for the first time in pond water as it was clogged and water was just running over it. When I restated the pump I noticed the first dump of water into the pond was real dirty, this was obviously from the stones under the sponge. Am I supposed to rinse these as well?
Thanks |

I didn't do mine all the time. What I tended to do was before it had a chance to go into the pond I would move the pipe onto the ground. As soon as the water became clear I then put it back into the pond. It happens I think because it has had time to settle (I could be wrong about this of course) and when it starts up again it brings up the settled water. The only time I cleaned all the sponges and material was if the water stayed green and dirty. Alison |

| Good advice thanks. The water comes straight from the filter to the pond (no hose) so I will hold a bucket or similiar underneath for the first flow next time. Do I ever clean out these stones? or just leave them all summer as they are? The pump has been running for a week now and am already seeing a major improvement in the water clarity. I never realised the blanketweed was so bad at the bottom. |

| When i had a filter like that i fitted a dump valve in it, slide valve, so i could flush it through ith a bucket of pond water or two, its supprising how much fine silt and mulm can get onto the media, but i only did it at the end of the season, late sept early oct when the system was slowing down so it didnt harm water quality. |

This post has reminded me, it's time I fed the roses! Need to backflush my filters. Time flies - I should have done it in March! |
