Sticklebacks

The taddies in my little pond are dong well - but so are the midge larvae. Can anyone out there advise whether a pond five feet by five and two feet deep will suport a couple of sticklebacks? And if so, where might I find them, please.

RE: Sticklebacks

Hi,

Sounds like they will have plenty to eat! They do like to eat tadpoles too, and one another. Mind you, everyone eats their fry as well.

Got mine from an aquatic centre (small family run one) for £2.50 each. I have since sold them some and ended up in profit! So a small place that sells fish may have some, or know of someone with a pond.

If you do get them out of someone else's pond, make sure you don't put big ones with little ones, as you will have only fat big ones when you get home. A little will go a long way.

And if you are really lucky, you may have a kingfisher come to keep the population down. Couldn't believe it--a town garden and there was a kingfisher right outside my window helping himself to stickelbacks a couple years ago.

Didn't expect that from the sofa!

I would like to put some sticklebacke in my pond. I am in Hertfordshire.
Anyone know where I can get some?

Well I have them but I am in Leeds in West Yorkshire so not very near to any of you really. I have managed to give them to a few people up north nearer to me but you are both a long way off. Sorry about that. It is very few and far between that you will find anywhere that sells them.

Here is a link that might be useful: alisons nature reserve
