Hi folks, great excitement for me today, when l discovered some babies swimming around in our pond(yes l know lm sad)anyway managed to net one out to have a look at it in a small nursery tank which we keep, and yes ,its a shunbunkin baby,l have kept it outside with its air vent lid on,as l know the other fish will eat it up if l left it in the pond, this is the first time our fish has had young,we have had the pond four years now.l have been watching the pond for the past couple of weeks as l was worried that we had lost our fish as they have not been swimming around at the top of the pond?no sign of them anywhere, even today there is still no sign of them,so they must be baby watching.l would like to hear if you have had successfull young.

We had four baby Comets survive, from the Xmas before last. I don't take fry from the pond, because cruel as it ounds, I don't need anymore fish so I let nature take it's course. The four of them were totally black (apparently they change) and a suprising range of sizes. Unfornunatley I'm assuming the heron took them, as I haven't seen them recently.

Well done, you first is such a thrill, my original 16 are now 150+ and only a few of the new fish are introductions. I tanked year 1's babies but subequent years have had to take their chances.

Hi Karen We have babies too!. First saw them end of last summer and they survived the winter. No worries that the other fish will eat them because my fish (all 7) are only 14 cm long. We have 2 shubunkin babies and 1 black one, they are about 3-4 cm long. You probably have more babies in your pond, if you spend time looking and keep still you're bound to see more. The baby black ones are particularly difficult to see. I just spent a while this sunny afternoon staring right up close at the black baby sunning it self, with a damsel fly nymph just behind it. Lovely! Mark

congrats! our fish spawned last year then turned and ate it? we rescued a water lettuce with spawn attached and literally dropped into a bucket of pond water to see what would happen - five fry emerged grew etc so we tanked them out of curiosity - then we had a poorly sturgeon, so he went in the tank. i'm thinking fry fast - sturgeon slow no problem? no he ate the lot then corked it! tut. good luck with your fry. jo o/

I have recently relined my pond and made it 1ft deeper. Now holds about 1800 gallons. When I drained the pond there were 115 fish that I temporarily stored in a 1000 gallon swimming pool that I got from Macros. I put back 75 fish including some small baby shubunkins and gave the other 40 odd away to a good home. Like the others I think that nature should take its course with babies but even then you still find your stock growing fast showing that you have good water quality!!
