no newtlets

I have at least 2 male & 2 female smooth newts but no sign of newt tadpoles. The males & females are always following each other and 'prancing' about, but no little ones. Can they still be laying eggs? Plenty of frog tadpoles. I have put some starwort in the pond from a previous suggestion.
Wheres my baby newts? |

Unless you go netting under the starwort, you're unlikely to see them yet. They're very translucent in the beginning. Don't worry, they'll come. The adults mate later than frogs and you will start to see them more when the froglets start leaving the pond. Dave |

| 'My' newtlets are between 2 and 6mm long now, translucent, and almost invisible. They hide in the silk weed, or lie motionless. If you look closely at a shallow sunny patch in the pond, you can spot them after a while - but it does take very careful looking, preferably lying or kneeling very close to the water! |
