Detergent in pond?

Realise you can get a certain amount of surface foaming due to naturally occurring proteins but this morning awoke to see my pond looking a bit like a bubble bath.

I suspect detergent. This happened once before some years ago and I found out later a local kid was lobbing detergent tablets over the (high) fence. On that occasion I confirmed detergent by paying a local laboratory for a water analysis - expensive and inconvenient.

Two questions:

1. Is there a simple home test to check for the presence of detergent?

2. Can anyone conceive a naturally occurring phenomenon that could lead to such a dramatic increase of protein?

TIA

Alex

tell you what i have noticed, I have a rather large clematis near by, and it had masses of flowers on it, the flowers all dropped off in the high winds of saturday and the foaming on my pond has stopped, maybe coincidence maybe not, just a thought, only the odd petal actually reached the pond.

but foaming can be caused by frogs, toads, kids with soap lol, and as chris says spawning, and the DOC (desolved organic content) ie dead bits in the pond.

Is there any scent or perfume?
You could take a cup full out, and drip a drip of cooking oil onto the surface and see if it goes "ping". Remember the old Arial ads? (Don't think this is very scientific but never mind!).

If the foam feels slimy in your fingers then I suspect spawning, that the way I can usually tell. The bubbles in your sink feel like nothingness, but protien/spawning bubbles tend to feel slimy.

Thats what I find anyway!
