Missing Fish

Posted by denise_scotland (My Page) on

After the winter my fish did not re-appear as usual. The pond is a bit cloudy but they seemed to enjoy swimming at the surface and hiding under lily leaves last year. (four 6inch goldfish). I eventually gave up and bought three 3-4 inch gold fish which have similarly disappeared! The pond is also now infested by cadis fly larvae which I hadn't seen before. It is a raised pond so herons etc shouldn't be a problem and I haven't seen the usual floating dead bodies that appear when fish have died in the past (pond is about 4 years old)!Help!

RE: Missing Fish

Have you tested the water? Ammonia, pH, nitrate, nitrite etc.
I don't keep fish, so can't really advise you. Cloudy or green water by itself is not necessarily the sign of an unhealthy pond.
Do you feed the fish, or do they just eat what is in the pond? Over feeding can cause water quality problems.
You could try adding a few bags of daphnia, which can have a remarkable affect on the clarity of the water quite quickly.
But you might wish to do a partial water change (with tap water conditioner).
Have you been out at night with a torch to see if you can see more?
Have you tried netting with a fishing net and tray to see what pond creatures you have (other than the caddis fly larvae)?
Do you have any plants and oxygenators other than the lilies?
Do you have a filter of any sort?

Not feeding fish as can see no sign of any! Lots of oxygenators and other plants. Cloudy water is due to silt mainly. Will do water test to check. Also have filter running which further oxygenates the water. This far north the need for torches is not till after 11:30 at night so will not check quite yet!

RE: Missing Fish

Do you think that your fish could have been stolen? I am very sorry if they have, but it does happen unfortunately. I knew someone who put a lot of Koi in a new pond in the front garden and someone came along at night and took the lot only leaving a shubumkin and a goldfish. Some people don't care at all about other peoples feelings as long as they get what they want without paying. It's disgracefull. I do hope you find them somewhere in your pond. I have a black ghost koi (it was a silver ghost, but has lost all markings) which I have only seen once in a year but it is still there as I saw it a few weeks ago for a matter of seconds. I probably won't see it again til next year now.

I have seen the little ones! Fleetingly and the dived as soon as they saw me but they are definitely there. No sign of last years yet though.
