Would you, or wouldn't you? Or am I nuts??

The plant bays I cast onto the shore of my fish pond are working reasonably well, however I am wondering if I should try to deepen them to give the plants more soil depth. Currently the soil will be 3" deep at the most and tapers off to nothing.
Below is a cross section through the pond's wall and shoreline.
and here are some in real life during their addition
Do you think I would be nuts to chip away, down to liner, the cement floor inside each bay, except around the outer lip, then give the exposed liner a 1/4" thick coat of fresh cement?
The cement is to protect the liner and stop any invasive roots getting between the liner and the existing cement.
I suppose the altenative is to mound up the soil so that the soil surface slopes and is roughly parallel with the original cement.

I wouldn't have put on the end of the question 'or am I nuts' as obviously we are going to respond by saying 'as far as we know you have always been nuts' lol. I like them as they are and have seen them planted up. If you wanted them deeper I presume that it is because you want to put larger plants in them so needing the extra depth. Is another idea of making the bays taller an option rather than digging down back to the liner? I know you will decide yourself anyway and as you like a challenge I am sure as we 'watch this space' we will see what you decide. Alison |

Its not neccessarily for larger plants, its just that the soil tapers to literally zero around the outer edges. Oh I am nuts! I have thought of making the walls higher but that is 1) awkward and 2) I dont know if it would look well. Added/mounded soil can be removed easily, cement's a wee bit awkward plus I am running low on the dye and at £20 a kg, inc getting it, its espensive to waste if I ran out. The 1/4" skimming would be undyed. I think mounding is the best option. |

What about just trying to do one of the bays and see how it goes. Other than that I was just thinking that would you want to make the tapered parts of the bays up as high as the nearside pond height, so making them into a trough. (OH !! after just reading back your post I am not sure if that is what you meant you didn't want to do) But if you did that then the soil would stay the same depth. I don't know if you think that would spoil the look of the pond edge though. Alison |
