poorly goldfish

One of my goldfish (aged about 5) was chased by 4 other fish for several hours yesterday. I assumed at first that they were mating but as the day progressed this one fish just kept trying to escape the others. It kept lying on the surface motionless and sometimes on its side until it was found again and chased. After a morning of this I tried to catch it to let it rest but did not manage and was worried that I was causing it to expend more energy.
It disappeared overnight - going beklow the surface but today it is again lying near the surface and looking exhausted -
Can I do anything for it - I fear it is going to die soon

| It may well be spawning, or prelude to it, males have been known to chase a female to exhaustion even death if they think she is redy to spawn, some females do hold on to thier eggs, so the males hound her till she sheads them, all you can do is seperate the fish a while see if it regains tis strength, but if it is a female she may well face the same when put back, female fish often get damaged during spawning, some do die! |

Thanks for the advice I didn't manage to separate them but the fish seems to be recovering - I was sure she wouldn't last the day yesterday and lying on the surface so long made her vulnerable to an early morning visit from a heron. Anyway today she is swimming around much more, eating and just getting the odd nudge from one fish but very little chasing. So perhaps we can look forward to some more baby fish AnnieO |
