Algae problem change - brown is good right?!

Hi,

Just thought I'd drop a line as I suspect that I may have a '3rd July' event as per Dampflipper's post on the pea green problem. The pond water has now gone from emerald green to brown (I'm assuming the algae are now dying off) and is starting to clear, which is great.
I've also noticed that there seem to be swimming things in the pond (non-frog or tadpole) that I can't see at the moment, so I'm hoping once the water clears I can see what's in there - you never know there may be some newts in there now!
(Having said that, I've found a few dead taddies with hlf their heads ripped off so I'm not sure it's all going to be good news......)

Thanks for all the tips and encouragement everyone!

Hi
Are you filtering off the brown stuff?
If it isn't physically removed it will decompose, which is an extra burden for the pond to cope with, and not desirable in warm weather if you have fish!

Ah......good point... hadn't thought about that!

Currently I don't have any filters in place as it's a wild life pond - and no fish either - so I think I'll have to see if I can remove some of it somehow once it settles to the bottom

Thanks for that - I'd forgotten the implications!

Hi

My new pond went green with blanketweed in the spring. I removed some by wrapping it round a large stick, but once the plants started to put on growth the water turned brown. It only stayed brown for around a week and then went crystal clear and I've had no further problems. I also don't have any filters etc.

It may be that you just need to be patient for a little while and nature will sort it out for you.

Cheers,

Paula
