| Ihave always washed my filter sponges out in pond water and it can be a bind, last time i washed them out with my hose, took no time at all and very clean. There seems to be a difference of opinion about which is correct, what do you guys and gals think. |

| POND WATER, the chlorine etc in tap water will kill the bacteria in the sponges and the bacteria are the things that you want. |

| Always washed my sponges out with the hose too, if you have a good bacteria media under it its not much of a problem, only used the sponges to trap dirt and not for bacteria anyway. |

I do the same as Alan or wash them under the outside tap. The foam in my filters is also purely 'mechanical' to trap dirt. The many plastic pot scrubbers above these (mine's an 'upflow' filter) are the 'biofilter' which I rinse in a bucket of pond water. I only clean my filters twice a year. |

| Thanks guys, i knew i would get the answer i hoped for. Sorry Sean, i think i will take the easy option as i do have a bio-filter incorporated in the system. |

| Can I ask what I should be doing please? I have a Fishmate 10000 Self-clean (so-called) pressure filter. It was in use for three months prior to the flooding of the 23rd June. It was cleaned using rain water after the pond was cleaned, but the filter was clogged again and had to be cleaned again yesterday. I have to say that I only cleaned the sponges superficially because I didn't want to lose the bacteria. Should they be really, really clean? And could I use tap water safely? TIA for advice Tricia |

Well Tricia, i had the same dilema as you, and Alan and Scotty both said use the garden hose, there`s no doubt that it really gets them clean and as i have been netting algae recently and stirring up the water it has been good to get the sponges really clean. Derek. |

| Pond water every time for me. The one time I used tap water (earlier this year following a filter blockage and overflow) it took the best part of two months before nitrite reading were back at a suitably low level and only recently are they back to 0. That was just cleaning the foam and not touching the bio media. Although the foams primary function is mechanical filtration it also host a substantial about of bacteria. By the way mine is a down flow box filter. |

| I’ve just cleaned my filter out it's a pressurized filter, I used the hose as the sponge's was black with dirt, after I cleaned them with the hose I dipped them in the pond and every thing else that I cleaned with the hose. Hello by the way im a new. Dean |

Hiya I always use a hose to clean my sponge filters, and is good for blasting out the debris, but I don't use it to clean out the bio filter elements (those tubular off-cuts) as the tap water will kill off freindly bacteria! Bill |

| Thanks everyone! In future I think I'll go with the flow and rinse the sponge material in tap water - but continue to clean the biological filter media with pond water. Tricia |
