How much feed for Goldfish?
| | |
Posted by Balliol (My Page) on Tue, Aug 16, 05 at 8:38
When my Goldfish firts started to feed a month or so ago they did not appear to be bothered about it. Now, every time I go near my pond the Goldfish appear looking for food and will eat what ever feed I put in. How does one work out what feed should be put in a pond?
By the way, some of them still appear to be very, "frisky". Should they stil be "at it"? |

My fish are still at it as well so no problem there. Most people say about the amount of food to give - is to throw in enough for them to feed within about 5 minutes and take any surplus out. In my opinion and what I do is throw in a few handfuls and leave them too it. They normally polish it off soon enough, not necessarily within 5 minutes though. I probably feed them twice a day at the moment. I generally try to feed them up for winter when they won't be feeding. So fatten them up for winter, but give it in small amounts a few times a day. There is often food in the pond for them if they do get a bit peckish. Alison |

Food, the recommended is no more that they can eat in 5 minutes, mine get a handful of pellets in the morning + any mozzies I net out of th water barrels around the garden, they had a feast of those yesterday. Nookie, my latest known spawning was September. |

| What everyone said above is the generally accepted consensus - and one of the REASONS you don't overfeed, and scoop out whatever is uneaten after 5 minutes... is to maintain water quality. Large amounts of fish waste and/or decomposing (uneaten) food, may have unhealthy implications! Personally, my pond is teeming with life, and is not overstocked with fish. So my fish do not need me to feed them at all, and I only do so to bring them to the surface for my viewing pleasure... |

hi all. fry r baby small fish. i feed mine during the summer 3or4 times pending on pond temp. high protine % in the summer but when the water temp drop's below 10c they r feed on wheatgerm pellets which has a low protine % so they can digest it,as fish slow down due to the cold there activatey rate drop's because fish r cold bloods. so it alway's good to have a tempeture gauge handy but don,t use a mercury 1 because if it break's it will kill your fish. also healthy fish can go without food with out any problems for over 150 days. so don,t worry if u don,t feed them for a couple of days or when u go on holiday for two weeks they will b fine as during the summer there r lot's of nateral food in there to keep going. -----------david-----------fishmaduk--------------------- |

I assume that my pond will have fry although I have not seen any although that may be because not only have I not looked but I would not know what to look for. I've let nature on its own. Could anyone tell me what they look like and what way they will develope because I have an idea that the buggers, the Goldfish that is, eat them. |

| The water in my pond looks like pea soup... is it healthy for my fish? I feed it twice a day, but have to wait a while before the fish comes to the surface to feed. I am totally new to goldfish in a pond and would therefore appreciate some advice from experienced goldfish keepers. |
