Koi has eye trouble

At the moment I'm looking after my sister's fish whilst she's on hols. I've noticed that a koi looks blind in one eye... or does it have a problem that can be treated?

Is the eye just glazed over or bulging?

I saw the pic yesterday Alan and it looked as if the eye was just glazed over.

Alan... it is bulging too (just that eye). Does this mean the lens has burst? It looks chronic rather than acute. The fish is normally active and eating well. Would whatever it is, be contagious?

It might just be it has caught its eye on something and inflamed it, it could be a mild infection, but for now see how it goes it doesnt look so bad right now, the fish looks healthy so it might sort it itself, but you can treat it if needed, 3/4 ounce of salt per gallon for 20 minutes or one of the antibacteria treatments but treat it out of the pond.

Many thanks Alan... I've done as you suggested.

BTW... you were right about the Tancho being female!

Picture of the eye today... do you reckon this is now a permanent blindness? Fish seems ok otherwise:

Hi Kaz,

I have a goldfish that is blind in one eye - it just looks like a sealed over scar. I'm sure it wasn't like that when I bought it three years ago, but have only recently noticed it. The fish is quite happy with one eye, so I'm not worrying about it. I also have a goldfish which is missing a fin on the left side. Since it doesn't seem to bother the fish, I'm not worrying about it either.

Tricia

Its well coverd, no sign of swelling there tho, might be cataracts, maybe the eye was damaged beyound repair and is now dead, you did right to treat it kazzie, at least theres no sign of secondary infection which is always good, I dont think there is anything more you can do without seeing a vet.

Thank you Tricia and Alan for the reassurance. If the fish was showing any signs of being distressed, I'd be distressed too... so we'd both require treatment!!!
