I found some eggs under a lily leaf, they are not snails they look like small frog spawn, i have put them in a small aquarium with some weed and pond water. I have minnows and golden orfe, which do you think they are. derek

Is it anything like this I have found on my lily leaves & water soldiers?

Here is a link that might be useful: jelly blobs on lily leaves

They are very similar except i only have one little mass with about 20 eggs in, have you any idea what they are. derek

RE: what are these eggs

in that case probably the eggs of the snail physa acuta http://www.applesnail.net/content/snails_various.php#Physidae

If they are similar to mine then I believe your jelly blobs are home to a colonial microscopic animal - Ophrydium- a sessile ciliate that is found embedded in a gelatinous matrix, they are often green as they may contain symbiotic algae. I have shown some of my microscope pics on ealier posting.

I have to agree with Mike--otherwise known as the attack of the yellow globules!!

I will have to save this otherwise I will forget http://protist.i.hosei.ac.jp/PDB/Images/Ciliophora/Ophrydium/sp_02.html

And are these a good thing to have living in your pond or does this ophrydium bring problems for other animals?

No I dont think it hurts other animals, but thro the jelly like eggs clustering on lily leaves, plant stalks, oxygenators & others (partic water soldiers)it smothers the plant and can kill them. I'm hoping mother nature takes its course & it vanishes. It makes the pond a mess & is not nice to have. I'm interested in hearing from any others with this gelatinous goo!!

They do spread and are not very attractive, but they can be kept under control with a fine mesh net. They are very oxygen hungry, and I have noticed that I don't see other things feeding off it or living in it--so it doesn't add anything to pond. They ate the water starwort this year as well as the water soldiers (both not easily accessible with the net), but have not bothered other plants.

For those interested I have discovered the actual blobs are a colony of cyanobacteria,of the genus Gloeotrichia.
Plenty of inf on the web.

That's the name I couldn't remember--I was told what it was when I sent a sample to an expert in Scotland. Amazing what you can find on the web (as well as in the pond!)
