Front Garden Pond Safety

I have no children. I was considering a pond in the front garden (which is larger than the back) so why then does everyone I mention it to bring up the risk of neighbourhood kids drowning in it? It's as if every time a tree is planted concerned people worried about children falling fatally from the branches as they climb it. Surely in both cases it's a trespass followed by dangerous actions unencouraged by the householder.

PS. I know there are grids that can make ponds child safe but they are unsightly which for me cancels out the pond's reason for being.

Do you have any sort of fence or gate?
I have thought about a small pond in our front garden, but we have a shared drive and the gates do not get shut, so would probably only do it if I could fence off the garden and pond bit. I would rather do this than try to fit a grid.
Last year it was in the news that a toddler wandered out of a nursery and died in a (back) garden pond. There are young children that regularly play in the front garden of a house hear ours, and I would worry that they might come in the garden.
Not sure what the legal position is...duty of care

I think that as long as you have gates that shut off your property then you should feel that you can make a pond in your own garden. How exciting that would be. If you feel a need you can always put a danger sign up nearby. Or you can put a decorative fence around the pond so it is a bit safer in case a young child does enter your garden. My sister in law was a childminder and she had a fence around her pond until she stopped working and now has taken it down. If I had room I would probably have a pond in my front garden..and side garden...instead of just the back. lol.

You should check with your local council, some areas have silly bylaws about such things, so worth checking first, might save you a problem later.
