Fishmate Pump Instructions

I know nothing about ponds but I have inherited a pond containing several fish - I'm told they are koi. There is a rectangular Fishmate UV & bio pump but no instructions. Can I get hold of the manufacturer's instructions? I looked in the lid a month ago and everything looked clear but now there's a load of algae-type stuff where the UV is. Do I have to clean it or something? If so, how do I do it and how often do I need to?

I'm not familiar with that filter but if it has sponges or brushes in it then yes they do need to be cleaned. Sponges should be thorougly squeezed out and cleaned in a bucket of pond water. Brushes usually need to be washed with a bit of pressure from a hosepipe.

Underneath all that there may be some biomedia (plastic shapes of some sort), these hold bacteria that help get ammonia and nitrites out of the water and musn't be left to dry or cleaned in tap water or the bacteria will die.

You need to clean it when it clogs up or it might overflow, hopefully someone here has more info on the filter. Koi take some looking after but learning about the filter is a good start.

What else is important about looking after koi? The pond level looks a bit lower than when I started and I don't see the fish much any more. How often should I feed them? The black foam stuff in the filter looks clean (and dry) but this growth is on the other side of the box. Looks to be under the UV light. Should I just scoop the gunge out? When I started, there was a trickle of clear water here,
falling over an edge next to the black foam stuff. Now it doesn't seem to be trickling over at all. Where would you go for more advice on these filters?

Well hopefully someone here will have some good advice but to me it sounds as if the pump is in the pond and has probably got clogged up, also scooping the gunge out of the filter is a good idea but it probably needs cleaning more thoroughly. If you top the pond up with tap water, anything more than an inch (anything at all ideally) you need to add dechlorinator.

Basically keeping koi is keeping water, you need to keep the water quality good or they will get ill. So getting the filter running is the first thing. I wouldn't feed them until you've got it cleaned properly and would maybe buy a test kit and see if there's any ammonia or nitrite build up in there.

I feed my koi three times a day but have finally got a filtration system I'm happy with and it keeps everything clean. Is there a fish or koi shop nearby you can go for advice and to just look around and see if they have your filter?

Yeah as Mark says, check the pump, clean out the cage at the front if it has one, but clean the intake, if you can figure out how to tka eit to bits and put it back together it wouldnt hurt to give it a full clean up, if its well clogged some particules might be in in the pump shaft too, clean the whole system, pump, filter UV then you will know its ready and done.

The UV tube will probebly need changing too, they only last a year at best, so if you are lucky you might get two full summers per bulb, it dosnt need to be on in the winter, but the pump and filter will need to be left running, when you change UV tube be careful of the clips that hold it in, break them and you might be in a trouble.

Also as Mark says, for koi you keep the water, if the water is ok the koi are too, one important weapon in your kit is water test kit, for ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH they are the basic water test you need, feeding, well you will find a feeding rutine that works for you, but I find they fare better if fed little and often, I feed moine 3-4 times a day sometimes, depending if I am here to do it, if not they get enough to so they eat it all in 5 mintues, you will learn your kois feeding habbits in time, dont feed them when the water temp drops below 50f/10c.
