My new Skippy Filter

Posted by dfinn England (My Page) on

Hi,

Ive recently built my new Skippy filter. I'm using it to house my fish temporarily as we are hopefully soon moving house so the fish need a temporary home at our new house.

Anyway I estimated the filter cost me about £25 and was really easily to construct.

The media is a loads of scouring pads (about 40 in there so far I think), Plastic bio material from my old filter used to seed the skippy with benificial bacteria and old coarse filter foam.

The layout is like a conventional skippy filter but I fitted an air hose on the filter inlet allowing me to connect an air pump to provide oxygen to the water.

Heres the skippy working

Also heres the plastic bin im using to house my fish. If the skippy works well i may convert this bin into a skippy for a new pond.

Its been running for about three full days now and so far ive seen little change but I didnt expect any change for a few weeks.

I Apologise for the large pictures.

All comments and criticism welcome.

Thanks,

Daniel

The fittings look nicely done. It does look like you could fit a bit more media in there though. How many fish are in the barrel, thats a bit small for them really isn't it?

If you don't move house before it start to get cold I think you'll need to move it all inside or in to the garage or something to stop it getting too cold in there.

Hi,

Yeh there is room for more media. It just looks a bit odd if I go into Tesco or ASDA and buy 50 scouring pads at a time. Im gradually filling it up.

Well the bin is deeper than the pond was (the pond was only 50cm deep and the fish have overwintered twice in there. I will hopefully have moved into the new house before the worst of winter occurs so I will put them in the garage there then move them out until spring. Even though there is only a small surface area in the tub the depth is about 2.5ft and filtration and flow rate are high so water is being cleaned as best it can. The fish seem fine anyway.

Thanks,

Daniel

fish

P.S. there are 6x 2-3" fish in there, 1 Shubunkin, 1 comet, and 5 common goldfish although sone has some really cool white markings on making it look like a mini kohaku koi lol.

Thanks,

Daniel
