What larva is eating my snails ?

Over the summer I've noticed an occasional larva swimming under the surface film. Its about 1" long (25mm)browny/grey colour, sharply pointed snout and a tri-knobbled rear.
The other day it was advancing rapidly across a lily pad towards a pond snail, latched onto it, and within minutes had consumed the contents leaving an empty shell. I have noticed a number of empty snail shells lying on the bed of the pond - obviously previous victims ! Does anyone know what this is the larva of ?

HI - Thanks for reply. It's definitely not a Gt.Diving Beetle / Dragon fly nymph etc. I should have mentioned that it is legless (as far as I can tell - the eyesight is not what it once was) and has no obvious jaws - being very pointed at the 'front'. It resembles a common blow-fly maggot, (except bigger and brown) so I would suspect some form of fly larva rather than beetle?
