Bye-bye - can't take the pop-ups

| Well, that's a shame. I understand the site needs to pay it's way, and the banner and side ads have to be there, though the banners have been getting a bit more intrusive recently.
But the pop-ups are a major irritation. I could modify my browser to eliminate some of them (depending on how clever the site designer is at evading these prevention measures), but I won't - why should I be forced into several hours of computer support by this stuff? |

| You might want to try Firefox as a web browser. I hear there's a plugin that stops pop-ups, and I believe you can ctrl-click (or something) on "persistent" ones to manually set a permanent block on them... |

Firefox web browser

| Just downloaded Firefox myself (and the AdBlock plugin) from www.mozilla.org - and so far I am impressed. It imported all my settings, favourites etc from Internet Explorer... ...And it works brilliantly at blocking pop ups and those most abhorrent and grotesque abberations: flashing graphic adverts! One or two ads have managed to get through, but right-click on them, and select "AdBlock", and they are dead forever. (Actually I kill their entire sites - rather than the individual ads) Chas, don't leave - give Firefox a try! You might find it useful on a lot more web sites than just this one... |

| Just downloaded Firefox a couple of days ago - well worth a try! |

I have ordinary and animated pop-ups 'blocked' on my browser. Didn't realise we got them on here! Sue |

Hi Chas, that's a shame. Try downloading Pop up stopper free edition from www.panicware.com It works quite well. You need to open it each time you go on the internet. If it stops you opening reply boxes on some sites, you just need to press ctrl at the same time as you press the reply box. I'm not having any problems at present, but a while ago I also downloaded webroot spy sweeper and ad aware. Pleeese don't go! |

| Hmmm... I know what you mean Chas. I do have a total ad blocker, but I have to keep turning it on and off because certain games sites don't work if I have the block on e.g. jigzone. Its the pop ups that are the most frustrating, particularly the ones that flash like crazy. |

I'm getting 'em now even with my 'blocker' on! The aol one is very irritating, especially as I'm using the aol popup blocker! Have emailed Spike complaining about them. The one thing I liked about this forum was no 'popups' Sue |

Senility has set in! Logged into GW via my husbands 'screenname/email' instead of mine and he didn't have popups blocked. He does now! |

| I suppose I should be grateful for small mercies because I couldn't access the site at all for quite a number of weeks. My computer's 5 yrs old and I only have Internet Explorer 4. I was getting an error message which totally crashed my computer each time. A neighbour tried his old computer with Explorer 4 and had the same thing happen, but the site works on his new computer. I don't seem to be able to upgrade my Internet Explorer, so it was bye-bye till today, when something made me try again. I'm only on dial-up and it's frustratingly slow now and I had to log on, but at least I'm back (for the time being.....) |

| Big kid, try firefox as others have suggested, it's great and does block popups although I never got any from IE as i has a popup blocker. It should be faster on an old computer as well I think because it's quite a small program and should only take a few minutes on dial up I think to download. |

Hi again Big Kid! Check the speed of your internet connection now. To do this right click on the little computer in bottom right of your browser (where you disconnect). Click status. If it says connected at anything less than 52000, you need to phone BT and ask them to "improve the gain on your line". I believe you don't get adverts if you are a subscriber rather than a free member of gardenweb. Big kid, have you done any windows updates recently. You may be able to get upgraded free from IE4. My windows update link is found when I click the start menu. If you haven't updated for a long time, there will be alot, but it will advise you which are the most criitical ones. I suggest you do them one at a time not at the busiestt imes eg not at 7.30 pm. Let me know if you need any more advice. |

| Thanks for help, guys. I'm not too clever with all this download stuff, so I shall have to wait till I can get help from a neighbour. Will be back if I need more help. Ta mucho!! |

| Errr.... I have no blocker, never seen a pop-up on here. You guys sure you don't have some sort of spy / adware on your systems? Try http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ Go for the personal version. Might help Phil |
Here is a link that might be useful: Adaware
