overwintering plants

hi, now that the cold is killing off my lillies and marginals, do i need to lift any of them out for the winter? the pond is only 20" deep with 10" margins?

apart from cleaning it out, are there any other tips for wintering the pond? i still need to get something to stop it freezing too.

thanks

RE: overwintering plants

Basically just clean out the dead foliage and let nature take it's course. There are special pellets you can buy to feed water plants, but otherwise just let them take a rest.

With regard to freezing, some people put balls into the water delay freezing, and that helps to some extent. However it will freeze from time to time.

To protect the critters in the pond, DON'T break the ice as that sends shock waves. As it is a shallow pond do try and melt the ice everyday so oxygen can get in. Best way I have found to 'break the ice' so to speak is to put bowls of very hot water on the ice and let it melt some holes through.

When the spawn comes, I do find putting couple of layers of bubblewrap over the spawn at night means the spawn does sink a bit more into the water (so less likely to freeze on top) and it does keep it warm. Over the past couple of years since doing this I have hardly lost any spawn at all to ice.

just cleaned out the pond today to prepare it for winter. I am asking father christmas for a pair of wetsuit gloves--it is so cold!!
